3) PPC Method

While we are super biased, we feel that one of the most novel and underutilized concepts in Triphasic Training II is the Performance Pattern Cycling (PPC) method.

This is particularly noteworthy because it addresses a common issue that many coaches "out there" (not here as you are on the inside and hip to these techniques), but may others overlook; which is how exercise sequencing can create unwanted movement patterns that negatively impact sport performance.

Here's why PPC is significant and novel:

  1. It challenges traditional exercise programming where coaches typically have athletes complete all sets of one exercise before moving to the next. For example, doing 3 sets of squats, then 3 sets of deadlifts, etc.
  2. The book demonstrates this concept by doing multiple sets of anterior-chain exercises in a row (like squats) can create compensation patterns that show up as excessive vertical undulation during sprinting, potentially reducing speed by 7-15%.
  3. The solution is PPC, which is to:
  • Follow any anterior exercise with a posterior exercise

OR

  • Switch back and forth between hip flexion and posterior chain exercises

This matters because:

  • Athletes maintain better movement patterns
  • There's less fatigue accumulation in any one movement pattern
  • It allows for longer rest periods between similar exercises
  • Performance transfers better to sport-specific movements

The book provides a practical example of transforming a traditional workout:

Traditional (Less Optimal):
A1) Back squat: 3 x 6 reps

A2) Hurdle hops: 3 x 6 reps

B1) Glute ham: 3 x 6 reps

B2) Prime times: 3 x 5 reps

B3) External rotation band: 3 x 12 reps

C1) Reverse hyper: 3 x 6 reps

C2) 1-arm lat pulldown: 3 x 8 reps

By using Performance Pattern Cycling it would like the following.
Complete all lifts in one set, then repeat for three sets.

A1) Back squat: 6 reps

A2) Glute ham: 6 reps

A3) Hurdle hops: 6 reps

A4) Prime times: 5 reps

A5) External rotation band work: 12 reps

A6) Reverse hyper: 6 reps

A7) 1-arm lat pulldown: 8 reps

While this may seem like a subtle change, it results in significant improvements in sprint mechanics and performance when implementing this method.

PPC represents a novel way to organize training that many coaches haven't considered but could implement immediately to potentially improve their athletes' results.
