Compressed weight-room-to-field transfer...in 2 weeks


"How long does it usually take for weight room gains to show up on the field?"

Most coaches will tell you four to eight weeks. Cal got it down to one or two.

The pairing that compressed everything

Functional Transfer Complexes — or FTCs — are one of those things that sounds fancy but is actually dead simple. You pair a posterior-chain exercise with a prime time fly movement.

That's it. Two exercises, done back to back.

But the results are anything but simple.

Cal put it bluntly: "With functional transfer complexes, I got this transfer of performance down to one to two weeks!"

The COVID experiment that proved it

During COVID, when Cal's athletes came back, they had terrible movement patterns. Running times were slow. Coaches were frustrated. The athletes were working hard but not seeing results on the field.

So Cal ran an experiment: he deliberately did NOT use RPR warm-ups. He wanted to see if FTCs alone could fix the compensation patterns. He had athletes do reverse hypers with big toe activation paired with flying straight-leg prime times.

Over 12 weeks, the hockey athletes' running patterns got smoother and faster — even though they were still skating heavy loads that normally wreck running mechanics.

No RPR. No special warm-up. Just the right exercise pairings.

Your go-to FTC pairings

  • Glute-Ham Raise paired with Bent-Leg Prime Time Fly (3–5 strides per leg)
  • Reverse Hyper paired with Straight-Leg Prime Time Fly
  • Razor Curl paired with Bent-Knee Prime Times (for top speed)

And if you're training yourself without a team — these pairings work just as well solo.

No spotter needed, no complex setup.

The weight room doesn't have to be separate from the field. It just needs the right bridge.
