The Foot Problem Nobody Talks About


Got a question about an athlete who was jumping backward during the quad dominance test. Here is what you need to know about it.

It's Not What You Think

The obvious answer? Quad dominance, tight hips, weak glutes.

That can be true, but look deeper at the athlete's foot mobility / integrity.

The Mechanics Breakdown

When your foot lacks mobility:

The knee gets shifted back during the descent

When the athlete drives into the ground, they get pushed backward

The "quad dominance" might just be compensation

The Real Fix

Before you start programming more glute work:

Talus reset (you can find this on YouTube)

Cuboid reset (Cal says these are safe to try but do what you feel is best or have a licensed staff person do it)

Deep calf massage (15 minutes per leg, 2-3 times per year)

The Calf Connection

Cal found that when he prescribed deep calf massages, he saw HRV improve. Why? The calf is your "second heart" for venous return.

When the lower leg is full of adhesions and restriction, your cardiovascular system works harder just to get blood back to the heart.

The Three-Time Rule

For football players, Cal recommends deep calf work three times:

Post-season

After spring training

Right before training camp

"They should be sweating and hurting after that one" said Cal when I talked to him about this one.

The Pattern Recognition

The foot that can't absorb force when it hits the ground sends a signal to the brain: "Downregulate the power output."

This shortens stride length, reduces split height, and creates what looks like "technique problems" that are actually hardware issues.

Your New Assessment

Before you blame movement patterns, check the foundation. Sometimes the problem isn't in the hip. It's in the hardware that connects the hip to the ground.

Fix the foot, and the pattern often fixes itself.
