Why We Tape Athletes' Mouths Shut On Purpose


"Wait, you tape their mouths during training?"

Yes. On purpose. And it's one of the simplest, cheapest tools in the whole book.

The CO2 Flip

Most coaches out there roaming IG late a night assume more oxygen in equals better performance.

However, blood oxygen saturation sits around 95-99% even during hard exercise — oxygen usually isn't the limiting factor.

Nasal breathing actually increases CO2 slightly compared to mouth breathing, because you're exchanging less total air.

That sounds bad. It's not — during sub-max work, that CO2 bump triggers the Bohr Effect, which helps your body release more oxygen to the working tissue.

The Mouth Tape Protocol

To lock in nasal breathing during aerobic work, tape the mouth shut. Three phases, easy to hard:

  • Phase 1: a small ¼ to ½-inch strip vertically, easy to push open if stress rises
  • Phase 2: a wider 1-inch strip
  • Phase 3: one large piece across the whole mouth

Move to the next phase once the tape's still in place a week later when they wake up.

"If you wake up in the morning and it feels like a bird died in your mouth, I will bet you a case of donuts that you are mouth breathing too much"

Mouth breathing overnight means you're more sympathetic and not fully recovering — and it'll show up in your HRV.

The Nose Hack First

If nasal breathing is hard for your athletes, have them hum for 20-30 seconds. That releases nitric oxide in the nasal passages and makes nose breathing easier before you ever reach for tape.

And if you're training yourself, start with mouth taping at night before you try it in a session — the sleep version is the easiest entry point.

The Reframe

You don't need more oxygen. You need your body to use the oxygen you already have better — and sometimes the fix is a piece of tape, not a supplement.
